The Mayor

A former co-worker used the term in describing this particular breed of officemate and the nickname's stuck with me. Every office has one of these. The Mayor is the glad-hander of the office, or the one that spends the first 3 hours of the day making the rounds, stopping by everyone's desk and making small talk. This can be interpreted as friendly behavior. However, in my past 2 jobs the glad-handing seems to be detrimental and fellow co-workers tend to see right through their false facade.

The Mayor in my current workplace definitely needs to develop his skills further. He'll stop by everyone's cube in the morning and allots about 5 min per person to talk about random stuff. However, while he's talking to you, he doesn't make eye contact since he's looking to see who else has come into the office during the 5 min that he's spent with you. He'll also abruptly decide that he's done with the conversation and leave while you're in the middle of a topic. It's very interesting to watch him in action and see the reaction of the person he's conversing with when he decides to just walk off. I can't decide whether he's just that inconsiderate or if he has a case adult ADD. Could be a bit of both.
