Home Sweet Home?
After spending the past few days in Kansas City, I've been questioning various aspects of my life, especially why I chose to live in NY. There are several reasons not to be in this part of the country - family and close friends in Texas, high cost of living in the northeast, triple taxation, minimal space...just to name a few.
I miss having open space and being able to drive in a stress free environment. I had rented a car and spent a couple of hours each night just driving around. It felt like a sense of freedom to be able to just drive endlessly. The highways in KC were very open, no traffic, and especially no gratuitous horn use. It was the first time in a long time that I felt relaxed and not on vacation. The people were extremely friendly, the buildings were clean and modern, the houses were large, and the cost of living was inexpensive.
However, despite all that, I'm not sure that suburbia is the right place for me right now. It's relaxing to be there for a few days, but eventually I think I would get bored. Plus, I felt like I was coming home on the plane back to NY. I'm not sure if it's because I'm just used to my apartment or that I finally feel comfortable in NYC.
I was talking to my driver and he described it as a love/hate relationship. He hates NY when he's here (hate may be too strong of a term), but misses and loves it when he's not here. I feel the same...
