In my humble opinion...
I've probably seen more movies in the theaters in the past couple of weeks than I have in the past year. The following are my reviews -
Mission: Impossible 3
Action packed movie. During the first action sequence I had to remind myself to relax and unclench my fists. It was fairly intense and hooked me in from the beginning. However, towards the middle it became more and more predictable. The last 15 minutes or so were pretty disappointing. I wasn't sure exactly how they were going to tie up the loose ends in the end, and I think the result was a pretty poor job. It's obvious that they just needed to come up with an ending and threw something together. Something implausible... even for a Mission: Impossible movie.
The Da Vinci Code
4 words. Don't waste your time. That was 2.5 hours of my life that I wish I could get back. This movie got pretty poor reviews from the critics, despite the box office popularity. I wasn't sure I wanted to watch the movie, but decided to go to accompany a friend. I reread the book to refresh my memory before going to the theater and I think that might have been my big mistake. Throughout the entire movie, I couldn't help but reference the book in my mind, noting all the shortcomings of the movie. The movie seems to move too quickly without proper transition between scenes. And at times, the way the characters explain concepts is too obvious. I think the director should have been more subtle in getting the audience to understand. Also, there were times that I didn't catch what Audrey Tautou was saying because of her heavy accent.
Over the Hedge
Very entertaining and cute movie. Animated films have evolved from when I was a kid - and I don't just mean in the obvious ways of the quality of the animation. But the appeal of these films for me today are that they cater to audiences of all age ranges. There's visual entertainment in the cute, fuzzy animals for the kids, and smart dialogue to entertain the adults. This movie definitely provided some social commentary about how humans are becoming too lazy and wasteful. At times it felt like getting hit over the head with a message, but packaging it in a cute cuddly animal minimizes the blow.
X3: The Last Stand
I have been waiting for this movie for quite a while so I had high expectations going into the movie. Unfortunately I arrived later than I had hoped so ended up sitting in the 3rd row on the side. It was tough to catch all the action sequences sitting so close to the screen, but overall it was a great movie. I would probably rank X3 and Over the Hedge at the top of my list for recently watched movies. One major downside of X3 for me was that there wasn't enough use of the new characters. For example, I expected Arch Angel to have a bigger role and they hardly showed Colossus at all. Also, I had some expectations with Rogue that didn't pan out in the end. Overall, though, it was worth the time and money. Maybe there will be a 4th one with Gambit. One can only hope...
