Chiang Mai, Thailand
This was the first city that the group of us experienced together.
I had my most exotic "snack" here. We took a day tour, which included a stop at a local market. I tasted my first (and last) fried cricket. It was more a mental exercise than anything else. The cricket itself doesn't have that much "insect" taste since its salted and fried. Could have been a potato chip for all I knew. A potato chip with legs...
Anyway, we spent the rest of the day taking all the various forms of transportation possible - an elephant trek, bamboo rafting down a river, ox cart riding, clinging on to a tuk tuk, etc. But it was a lot of fun. We even went on a "night safari" which was basically a tram tour at the local zoo. That was actually really cool because we ended up getting to feed some tiger cubs bottles of milk. It's amazing the things that you can do when there aren't strict regulations and lawsuits everywhere. By the same token, I suppose we could have been mauled.
On the cultural side, we took a quick trip to check out Doi Suithep. There are amazing views of the city from the mountain top that the temple sits on. Since we didn't have a guide of the wat, I think the historical significance was lost on us.
There's a huge night market in CM which we visited a couple of times. They had various foods, souvenirs, tshirts, and cheap massages. The roti over there is so good - roti with bananas and chocolate syrup. Mmmm...
We also checked out the Simon Cabaret show one night. The big attraction about these shows are that the performers are lady boys as they call them over there. Some were obvious while others were beautiful women. It'd be difficult to tell that they were once men... or are still men, or whatever.
