Gym etiquette

Normally, at the gym, I choose a treadmill on the end of the row so I'm only next to one person as opposed to sandwiched between two sweaty joggers. Yesterday, I wasn't fortunate enough to have that option. I was hard pressed to make a decision - choose a machine without a working tv monitor or jog between a female and a not-so-sanitary looking male. I prefer not to jog next to males since they often sweat more hence creating certain odors. Sorry for the generalization, but that's just been my experience at the gym. I realize that not all men smell.

Anyway, I really wanted the visual entertainment for motivation so I chose the working tv between the two joggers. I chose poorly. Everything was going fine for the first 10 minutes or so. The female on my left eventually got off the treadmill only to be replaced by another male. Mistake number 1 was choosing this particular machine in the first place. Mistake number 2 was not getting off and finding another one when the guy got on the machine to my left.

So here I am jogging and watching my music videos when all of a sudden I get this whiff of an unpleasant smell... its not body odor. It happens once in a while, so I shake it off and give the guys the benefit of the doubt. Another couple of minutes later, there's another one, only stronger this time. Now I'm casually glancing to my left and right to try and determine which guy is the source and to let him know that it's not ok. Maybe another five minutes later, the most offensive attack occurs and I'm shaking my head thinking that I just made mistake number 3 which is not getting off the machine after the second assault on my senses. But at this time, I'm determined to figure out which guy it is. I had my suspicions that it was the sweaty, heavyset guy on my right, but on the other hand, the smells didn't start occurring until after the female on my left had been replaced with a guy. And although the guy on my left looks fairly clean and respectable, who knows. Can't judge a book by its cover. I needed to know. After a couple of minutes, the guy on the right finishes his workout and leaves. I'm on my treadmill for at least another 10-15 minutes with no incidents. Satisfied that I uncovered the culprit, I end my run.

What is it about physical exercise that makes people think it's ok to let loose bodily odors? If this guy needs to use the restroom, he should get off the treadmill and take care of business. Or if it's escaping out of his body uncontrollably, he should know to stop running until it passes or something. It's NOT ok to expose your fellow gym members to that kind of punishment. Please be considerate of others around you.

Anyway, lessons learned for me. It wasn't worth it in the end to choose the tv over my sense of smell.
