Open time
Tennis players from all over the world have descended upon the city. You know what that means - it's US Open time again.
I've attended at least one session of the Open every year that I've lived in NY. This year will be no different. However, this year I actually had some chances to get up close and personal with the players.
I was invited to attend the Maria Sharapova/Land Rover launch party for Ford the other night. It was another one of those typical NY parties filled with self important people. Even though I feel totally out of place at these events, I enjoy going just to people watch. It's amazing how NY'ers at these events act exactly as you would imagine or see on Sex and the City. There were quite a few inebbriated girls that started hanging on older men whom you had to assume were somehow well connected in the high society circles.
As soon as we got there, we ran into Maria Sharapova and her entourage. I was immediately struck by how tall she is. I knew that she's over 6', but seeing it in person had more of an impact than just hearing the numbers. She looked exactly the same in person as on the court.
There was also a guy walking around with a championship boxing belt slung over his shoulder. Someone had to approach him to find out that he was a cruiserweight boxing champion. What the heck weight class is that?? If you need to bring your championship belt around to parties...only in NY. Oh, Serena Williams also made an appearance later in the evening.
Today the USTA and Babolat held an event at Grand Central to kick off the US Open season. I strolled down there during lunch and was able to catch Raphael Nadal just before he left and then Andy Roddick as he came in. Both looked the same in person as on court. Roddick, however, looked quite uncomfortable with the event and looked like he couldn't wait to get out of there.
I can't wait for the Open to begin...
