No change for you!

I found a "fast food" Indian cart during lunch today. I haven't had Indian food in a while, so I figured I'd grab something quick. There are only 2 options on the menu - the vegetarian lunch box and the "special of the day" (meat) lunch box. Today's special was Chicken Tikka Masala with a side of spinach. It was alright, but they skimmed big time on the chicken. But none of this is relevant to my point...

Anyway, the price posted on the cart for the meat lunch box is $4.99. I get my money out and hand the lady a $5 bill. I stood there for a few minutes waiting for my change, but got nothing as she rushed to fill the next customer's order. (Ok, so I didn't really stand there, but imagine if i had...) It got me to thinking, what's the point of posting the price as $4.99? Why not just post $5 if you're not going to give customers their penny change? Are they skimming $.01 per lunch box from the IRS? (The veggie lunch box was $3.99 so presumably the customer that gives $4 isn't getting any change for the veggie box either.)

They better be reporting my extra penny.

  • I hate it when that happens! Why do cashiers always think that people don't want what's coming to them? Just because a few people don't care about the last penny doesn't mean none of us do. Put a penny cup by the register for those who do not care to keep their pennies, otherwise give them to the people they belong to!
