Random Techonology
There have been some interesting bits of news lately on new technology, so I thought I'd share a couple.
Bausch & Lomb have teamed up with Nike to develop a new contact lens that supposedly helps with athletic performance. It sounds like it basically reduces glare of the sun, but it's not supposed to replace wearing sunglasses. It looks cool on the person wearing them, albeit a bit freaky. But for ~$47/box (source: 1800contacts.com) I think I should just practice more and wear sunglasses.
The other development is a new ringtone that everyone's talking about. A Welsh company developed a high-pitched, irritating tone that older people can't detect as their hearing deteriorates. Kids have started adopting the tone as a ringtone for their cellphones during school hours, thinking that teachers won't be able to discern when the students' cell phones are ringing. The NYTimes has an article on the development as well as a sample soundbyte of the tone to test your hearing skills. I'm not sure whether I'm glad that I can hear it. I'm happy to know that my hearing is still intact, but the tone definitely grates on your nerves after a bit.
